The Rusty Rhino’s history begins with Oom Doors’ beloved local shop. For years, he served the community and travelers with warmth and authenticity. His shop was more than just a store; it was a gathering place and a hub of conversation. Upon Oom Doors’ retirement, Dave and Karen Ritchie saw an opportunity not just to continue his legacy but to elevate it, enhancing the park’s offerings for all its residents.
They partnered with Richard and Coleen Batten, who bring extensive hospitality industry experience. Their passion for the bushveld, conservation, and community has transformed The Rusty Rhino into more than just a market—it’s a destination meticulously curated to reflect their commitment.
The first phase of The Rusty Rhino’s journey is now complete. To retain a little of the past, we have repurposed the old roof trusses into magnificent doors and wrapped corrugated iron around the shop counter from the old roof and used Oom Doors’ fencing to craft unique light fixtures. Our handmade shop fittings, including tables and crates, are vibrantly hand-painted to capture the shop’s spirit.
Our carefully selected range of artisanal goods celebrates South African flavours and craftsmanship. Visitors can enjoy freshly baked bread, homemade jams and spreads, and hearty frozen meals. The shelves feature proudly South African gifts, perfect for taking home a piece of the bushveld.
While the Farmstall Shop marks the beginning, Rusty Rhino has ambitious plans for the future. Over the next year and beyond, new additions will continue to enrich this bushveld gem, providing a space for families, friends, and adventurers to gather.
The Rusty Rhino aims to be more than just a marketplace. It is a place for creating memories, sharing stories over good food, and integrating conservation into every experience.
